What is Reiki and How Does it Work?

Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing technique that uses life-force energy to promote physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. It is a holistic practice that works on the body’s energy systems to bring balance and harmony, and has the ability to heal physical ailments, reduce stress, and improve overall health and wellbeing. Reiki works by channeling the life-force energy through the practitioner (who has been attuned) to the client via light touch or a hovering of hands over the body. This flow of energy helps the energy to move through the body where it is most needed for healing and balance, where this movement of energy can help harmonize and restore the body’s natural energies back into balance.

One of the coolest things about Reiki, and what separates it from other holistic healing modalities and energy healing, is that it works simultaneously on all levels - physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. The root cause does not necessarily have to be known for it to work. For example, the reason behind the stress that is causing spiritual disconnection, neck pain, headaches, and emotional stress does not need to be known (although it is not harmful if it is!) Reiki will help to move the energy through the body, beautifully healing the body in the way that it needs most. The practitioner will also utilize connection to Reiki guides and intuition as a way of hand placement and what might be needed most in your session. 

The first time I experienced Reiki I had NO idea what it was. But I experienced such lovely feelings of peace during that session, peace that I had never felt before. Clearly, peace is what I needed right then - a knowing and understanding that everything would be okay. In sessions since, I’ve had physical healings, a clearing of stress, etc. Again - all depending on what was needed most! I have had clients have visuals, or physical feelings, inner nudges and knowings, many different ways of experiencing this healing energy. Just know that there is no right or wrong as we always receive what we need most during this amazing holistic therapy session. One thing is for sure - Reiki will never cause harm, only good!

As we’ve already covered, Reiki works on each level of health - physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. This is especially important when discussing Physical health, as our other bodies of energy are closely intertwined with our physical health. Oftentimes our physical health and conditions can tell us about what’s going on within our mind, or our emotions. For example, physical pain within the low back could have to do with something physical that happened but also potentially rooted in financial or security fears - whether from now, childhood, or rooted in your parent’s thought process, and hasn’t been released from the body. With Reiki, the energy will work through both the physical rooted aspect, but also any emotional/mental/spiritual blockages that may be accompanying this. Remember that if it’s rooted in something mental, only doing physical healing will not resolve it fully! 

Sometimes, physical pain might not have to do with the region that it’s associated with. As an example, let’s say that you have dizziness or vertigo. In this scenario, the dizziness is caused by dirty blood because the liver is overtaxed and needs some love. With Reiki, the Reiki energy will be working on both the head as well as the liver to help clean and purify the blood, and can help energetically remove any other emotional/spiritual aspects of what the liver may be holding onto. How cool that we can treat both!

Reiki also promotes physical healing - quickly! Your body is absolutely incredible at maintaining homeostasis and healing itself. Because Reiki is helping to rebalance the natural flow of energy, many of my clients report how quickly a wound or organ or imbalance healed. Shocking - until you experience it for yourself!
